multi factor authentication - Updating mobile phone during SMSOTP login in WSO2IS is failing with SMSOTPException: User does not exist in the User Store

Question

With SMSOTP enabled (in 5.10.0 with this guide https://is.docs.wso2.com/en/5.10.0/learn/configuring-sms-otp/#configuring-sms-otp), when logging-in with user "[email protected]" (who belongs to tenant "example.com" and has no mobile phone in his profile page) and selecting SMSOTP as the multi-factor method, the system is correctly asking for the user's mobile number. After entering the number and clicking "Update", we are presented with an error screen saying:

Authentication Error!
Something went wrong during the authentication process. Please try signing in again.

At the same time, the following exceptions get logged on the IS:
