python - How would I go about changing the legend lines to squares or rectangles in a stacked area chart?

Question

I ran across this article about changing legend lines to squares or rectangles: Small square instead of line in legend?

However in all the examples I see for this the legend is kind of rebuilt from scratch. I would just like to grab the colors and legend text that is already there and just make the line a rectangle or square so you can see it better.

Unfortunately I don't have the ability to add fancy packages to my system I just have basic anaconda.
