java - Behaviour of @Version when using JPQL

Recently I have found that version checking ( optimistic lock) and version updating do not happen when we use JPQL ( @Query and @Modifying). Hence, I modified the SQL using

a.version = a.version+1

to increment the version. But I'm not sure how can I achieve version checking in where clause.

I can do this by querying the table first to find out the current version number and then do the update. But I'm not sure it is the recommended way. Expecting an expert advise.
